Tiles & Tonic was founded by Liz and Leigh — two friends, neighbors, and mahjong obsessives who realized the game had completely taken over their lives in the best possible way.
Liz discovered mahjong and immediately did what any reasonable person would do: taught everyone around her. Her neighbors, her friends, her daughter's lacrosse teammates, the people at the wine bar down the street. Born in Oklahoma and rooted in Northeast Ohio, she brings a genuine warmth to every table — the kind that makes first-timers feel like they've been playing for years — and a competitive edge that keeps seasoned players on their toes.
Leigh brings the cool to the table — literally. Originally from Oklahoma, she carries that warm southern hospitality into every lesson and event. Her eye for aesthetics, her calm teaching style, and her knack for making the game feel effortless is why students come back again and again. Together, they're the duo you want teaching you, hosting your event, and yes, probably beating you.
Oh — and the name? Tiles & Tonic says it all. Every great mahjong game deserves a great drink. Whether it's a custom cocktail, a glass of wine, or something bubbly, Liz and Leigh believe the tonic is just as important as the tiles. It's the reason the vibe at every event feels less like a lesson and more like a party you don't want to leave.
And if you hear someone shout "Bird Bam!" — you'll know you're among your people. A beloved tradition in the American Mahjong community, the Bird Bam has become a joyful staple at Tiles & Tonic events. A little mahjong, a little cheers, a lot of joy — and once you've done it, you'll always want to do it again.
Two Oklahoma girls now rooted in Northeast Ohio — they co-founded Tiles & Tonic to grow the American Mahjong community across Ohio and beyond, one lesson, one event, and one retreat at a time. Proud brand ambassadors for The Mahjong Line and committed to giving back through charity partnerships woven into everything they do.
"Good tiles, a great tonic, and a Bird Bam to finish — that's our kind of evening."
"I walked into Mahjong 101 having never touched a tile — two hours later I was calling mahjong and booking my next session. Now I host a weekly game at my house. It completely changed my social life."
"I booked a girls' night for my birthday and it was the easiest party I've ever thrown. Liz and Leigh brought everything — tiles, teaching, and the best energy. All ten of us were playing (and laughing) within the hour."
"The Fount Tournament was absolutely epic — competitive, hilarious, and so well organized. Tiles & Tonic threw the best mahjong event I've ever been to, and I've been playing for years."
Everything first-timers (and seasoned players) ask us most.
Absolutely — that's exactly what Mahjong 101 is for. We've taught 250+ players, most of whom had never touched a tile. By the end of your first lesson you'll be calling tiles and having a blast. No experience, no pressure, all fun.
American Mahjong — the version played with the National Mah Jongg League card, jokers, and plenty of table talk. It's social, strategic, and wildly addictive in the best way.
Just yourself! We bring the tiles, mats, racks, score cards, and all the instruction. If you fall in love with the game (you will), we're happy to point you to our favorite sets.
Send us a booking request and we'll confirm availability — usually within 24 hours — then send easy payment options: card, Venmo, or Zelle. Nothing is due until we confirm.
We're based in Northeast Ohio and we come to you — your home, clubhouse, favorite winery, or office. We've hosted events in five states and counting, so don't be shy about asking.
Private events work beautifully for groups of 4 to 20. Four players make a table; more players make a party. Tell us your headcount in the booking form and we'll shape the event around it.

"I was nervous I'd be the only one who didn't know how to play. Ten minutes in, that worry was gone."
